I was not aware

Evie offered the prince her hand and raised one eyebrow.
“I was not aware that I was being tested, my prince.” She said with a smirk and then walked around his horse to the one that was to be hers for the time being. A brown beauty with kind eyes and Evie’s smile widened.
“Thank you, Your Highness. Then she and I might complete each other well.” As he must have noticed during their run through the gardens yesterday, Evie was not necessarily always calm herself.
She swiftly got up on the horse and glanced at her sister as she spoke, noticing the way her eyed her dress. For a moment, Evie couldn’t help but feel guilty. The dress had been a gift from their father, as had the necklace around her neck and the shoes on her feet.
“Oh, sister. Wherever you go, I go.” She finally said with a sweet smile and as the party began to move towards the woods, Evie looked to the prince. The king was throwing fascinated glances her way, but she pretended not to notice.
“My prince, I must thank you again for inviting me. I have never been a part of a royal hunting party before.” Or any hunting party, for that matter. She did not eat meat and once after her father had brought home the head of a stag from a hunt with friends she had cried for days. Needless to say, a hunt was not the ideal place for her. However she thought it best to keep that piece of information for herself and be on her best behavior.

She had a gentle heart, it would seem. Too gentle to handle the burden of a crown without breaking her neck in the process. Although Luca did appreciate that about her. It made for more pleasant conversations.
Her question did catch him by surprise as it was much more daring than he had expected. Still, he smiled pleasantly.
“I probably am.” He admitted. There was no point in lying. “But my sole ambition is to please my father.”
Luca did not seek fame and glory, or fortune or power. That was one of the reasons why his father did not favor him. He did not possess the desire to be the greatest of them all. He was more than satisfied with doing his father’s bidding and serving him in any way he could.
“Which, funnily enough, does not please him.” He chuckled at the thought. It did please Lucian to have Luca around to run his errands, but he feared for the day he died and feared that his oldest son might not step up to the task of bringing prosperity to their name. And yet, would Luca now begin to refuse his father and create ambitions of his own, that would not have been acceptable either. No matter what he did, it seemed he could not win.
