They deserve it

“Come now, not in front of the children” Teased prince Milo as he helped the woman to her feet as Evie approached. Once she was updated on the news, Milo smiled and straightened up slightly. He was happy to help, truly. Although he did fear this was not enough. He made a mental note to ask the lady Evie about the rest of the kingdom afterwards. For now, he would allow the happiness in the room.

“I wished to help” He smiled and turned his eyes to the children. “They deserve it” He smiled, confident that he had made the correct decision, but still nervous. He would have to hide this project from his father. His father would never have approved this. He would have said the money must be put towards something valuable, like war or a beneficial marriage. Like his marriage to that princess… His eyes went to Evie and he tried to hide his disappointment as he realised he’d never be allowed to marry her, no matter her brilliance or beauty.

If he were a free man, the choice would have been easy. But he was not. He was a prince, only ever allowed to follow his duty to his kingdom and to do as his father wished. No matter how much it crushed him.

Yet now, he had decided to take things into his own hands. The future of this orphanage would be bright, no matter what the king said.

Andy nodded shortly and then took a deep breath to steady herself. She needed a plan for approaching her father with this problem. Perhaps she could ride past the town and pick up some of his favourite fruit? Or some fresh meat from the butcher?

“Oh no…” She breathed as she realised. Her sister was at that damned orphanage! She glanced up and saw nothing but grey and black clouds as far as she could see. Damn! She could do nothing but hope that her sister would make it home in time for the storm. Her thoughts were interrupted as the servant can back out, now with the horse in tow. She sighed impatiently. If he knew the whole story he’d understand, but alas she couldn’t tell him.

“If you are concerned for my safety, I shall allow you to ride with me” She said shortly. She really did not care whether or not he decided to do so, she was in a hurry and she could not stop for anyone if she wished to outrun the storm which was fast approaching. The rain had already soaked her coat, but she could not care. She must get home.

She looked down at him, stern look in her eyes, awaiting his answer.
